Rabbit advice...

Our rabbit was spayed tuesday last week. In terms of post op care, the vet told us she needs to stay in her hutch for 14 days to allow the wound to heal properly. However she is getting really restless now and I feel terrible. Is there really nothing we can do? She normally has run of the entire house.

If we just have to stick it out then I understand, but thought I would ask for some advice on here. She has plenty of "boredom breakers" in her hutch.

I can't help with the specific question, I had my buck neutered and he was fine within a day, my doe was already spayed when I got her.

If you have facebook you could post a message to the RWAF - http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/ they often put up messages on behalf of people asking for advice.
Or post on http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/forum.php they're a really really knowledgable bunch.
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • That does seem like a long time. When my doe was neutered, I didn't have to confine her though it was recommended to keep her on one level - no ramps or steps, as she might re-open the wound that way. Perhaps you could keep her in a small room or form a pen around the hutch?

I have never heard of that long before. When i had my doe spayed (march) i was advised to keep her on one level and let her rest for a day or two. Then we could let her out but try to avoid too much jumping.
After a week i would have thought the wound would be well on its way to healing now. I would let her out and just keep a eye on the wound.
  • I did let her out for a while in our spare room last night and took out anything she could climb on. She did a lot of mad running around and then sat with us and had a rest :) she seemed in a much better mood this morning and her wound looks ok. Luckily she has her 10-day check up at the Vets tomorrow morning so I will ask then.

When our girl was spayed she was kept confined for three days and just on a single level for a week then was allowed to carry on as normal. By that time the stitches were almost all gone and the wound was no longer in danger of splitting open.
  • She had her check up this morning :) the stitches are just about dissolved and the wound is no longer vulnerable so now we can all get back to reality and she can get back to digging up our garden. Very happy!

We've got all this to face in February. :( Am not looking forward to taking Missy to get done. Poor girl!
