Countrywide trying to overule Landlord!!!!!

They can and probably will refuse to hand over the keys for any spurious reason they can think of. But they really aren't that important. Most sensible landlords or home-owners would change the BARREL of the front-door lock as a matter of course.
What's more important is that you formally give them notice that you're sacking them IN WRITING, paying especial attention to the terms in the contract.0 -

Did the local agent sell his company to Countrywide?
If so you may still have a binding contract with the company, now owned by Countrywide
If it was a sale of assets rather than a sale of the company you may still have an implied contract with them since you have been using and paying for their services for three years0 -
If they refuse to give the key I would, in addition to sacking them, raise the issue all the way up to ARLA and I would go after them for the cost of having the lock changed by a locksmith.
If the original agent was taken over and the new agent did not propose new terms, the original terms still stand.0
