Can I transfer housing benefit to a different council?

I am moving out of my local council area and moving into another - in a different town. I currently get housing benefit, can I transfer my housing benefit award to a different town without starting my claim from scratch?

I would think it would be a fresh claim.

Yes , i moved from Scotland and did. You have to inform the office dealing with your claim and they contact the relevant office of the area you are going to.

Eh? You transferred a Housing Benefit claim without completing a new claim form?

Not sure that's really possible, usually need a full new claim, especially as most councils use different claim forms, different HB IT system and different paperwork filing systems. In fact very few actually use paperwork anymore, so they wouldn;t have anything concrete to send on.

this surprises me considering even when moving house under the same council a new claim is needed, it makes the 2nd claim faster but it still has to be made.

You need to make a fresh claim, whether you remain within the same borough or not.

you do need a fresh cliam, but you can apply up to 12 weeks before you move.
