website design

Options
Hi everyone,

Im looking to see how I can have my own website, where I can sell my photo flower cards and other crafts. I have basic computer knowledge, but willing to learn. I have a limited budget to work with.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how I could go about this?

Any advice/help would be much appreciated.

Thanks :-)

  • Hi there

It would be very difficult to tell you how to do all those things in one post lol, it depends what kind of a website you want as im pretty sure you could do a web site for free, but the quality wouldnt be so good.

On a basic level you would need some software to enable you to create your website, somthing like namo webeditor, you can download a free trial for 30 days to have a go with it.

Also you need A domain name with some webspace to upload your website into.

My suggestion would be to buy a decent book on this subject and i would suggest you goto a book store so you can look thru the books first, I wouldnt buy one online as there are so many books out there you need to look thru and find somthing that will be useful to u.

You might even consider a basic html course at ur local college, as you could pick up the basics off somone really quickly and have a website up and running in no time.

None of these things are expensive !!

open a free yahoo account and then go to goecities which lets you do a website blog type thing this will give you a good idea of what is involved as it's not as difficult as some people might like you to think.

If you are looking to do this yourself - get a free account as computerwoman says and learn html, then you will need to look at getting a shooping cart (free ones are ut there - zencart, oscommerce + others) and ways of taking payment (paypal? - high commission but easy to intergrate)

Might be best to test the water first - how about ebay?

which broadband supplier do you have, as some offer free website space.
worth checking with your supplier first.
free is alot cheaper than signing up to something you may already have.

You said you want to sell stuff - Mr Site is an incredible £16.97 from Amazon.co.uk with free delivery - and you'd get your own domain name along with it.

If you want something that will look proffesional and good you're going to have to learn some html and about css - I would def reccomend looking at ruby on rails. You wouldn't even need to learn it fully as if you get the book Agile web development with rails it walks you through how to create an online sales store with shopping cart etc.
  • Thanks so much everyone, you have been a great help. I really appreciate it.
