What size cat carrier

I will be transporting my (5kg) cat from London to Glasgow by car. I've been offered a second hand carrier, size is 13 x 13 x 21 inches. Will this be large enough? If not what size should I get?

  • If you're going all that way, then a normal cat carrier probably isn't the best thing. I travel long distances with my cats and use a large dog cage - there's space for a bed and small litter tray and they can stretch out and get comfy. Or you could try the seatbelt harnesses for cats if your cat will wear one. I remember some other posts on the board from folk who use them with success.

I agree with Bailey - for short trips of an hour or so that carrier would be fine. but not for a journey up to Scotland. the cat is going to need its litter tray, food, water and somewhere to sleep. look on freecycle for any large pet cages you could perhaps convert - that will fit in your car - even if you have to fold the rear seats down.

If you get a crate, be sure to take some kind of cloth to cover it in case your pet is stressed by seeing scenery go by.

Definitely a dog cage with a blanket inside, water dish and even a small litter tray - this is a long journey....

if you have enough room for this, it has the advantage of you being able to slide in the divider so that you can clean the litter tray out with no chance of puss escaping in a strange place.

Give any basket/cage you eventually use a good pull around to check the door is totally secure- wicker or plastic has a bad habit of sometimes having enough give for doors to open.

OP if you have room to let pusscat stretch out in the back seat area, I'd go with a harness, lead, dog seatbelt restraint, and the cat carrier on the back seat, open, if your cat feels like having a safe quiet place to go on the journey.

I just did this with my young cat earlier this month -

If you aren't using the boot space for luggage etc I would get this caged off, with a litter tray, food and water, and carrier/bed area. That is a long journey and unless your cat is very chilled will be a bit stressful.

Has your cat travelled before? If not , you may get stuff coming out of both ends and need space for this to happen!
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
