Acouple of years ago put some in and they are now approaching 6ft high against a sunny fence0 -
Holly is cheap - even free. You can have as much of ours as you want!. Or blackberry - roses - hawthorn.
Berberis is cheap to buy and prickly too.0 -
We had a particularly vicious berberis in our garden when we first moved here. We left one in a 'vulnerable spot' but dug out the rest. Please remember that you need to prune these things, which is a very unpleasant job. If you really want them, (and I know that sometimes they're a necessity) rosa rugosa is used a lot in municipal plantings. (Hangs on to all of the old carrier bags too!
) The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.

A second for this, bees / hoverflies love the blossom, bird love the autumn berries, at the moment I have blackbirds & robins eating my yellow berries
