Divorce Left Me With Bad Rating How Do I Solve This?

Bit of advice if anyone has any, as a result of a divorce a credit card I had with the ex wifes name on it was not regularly paid as all correspondence regarding it was going to our former matrimonial home. As a result this has now been passed to debt recovery agencies and my credit rating has been smashed!
I can and am willing to pay the payments to the credit card company which I thought were being paid but it seems that every time I ring them I simply get diverted to the agency. Now I can't get credit anywhere and I'm not sure if there's anything I can do to change that? Any body any advice or ideas??

So basically the card is in your wifes name and was it a joint account and your ex wife was a secondary card holder say ?

It sounds like its been passed to the agency, I presume you agre to pay the agency x amount a month.

You can change the whole "cant get credit" by paying any debts off, running your current account very well, pay any credit cards off in time.

Was this a credit card account in your name?
But that you assumed wife was repaying?

Has the debt collection agency managed to find you and write to you at your new address?

If it is with a debt collection agency then chances are a default has been registered on your credit file.
Worth getting a copy of your credit report to see what is on there. A default will stay on file for 6 years from the date of default shown on your file.

If you didn't inform the creditor of your new address then there is little chance of you getting the default removed, however if you pay the debt off then the default will be marked as settled.

You are still likely to struggle to get mainstream finance though.

If you have had any joint accounts with your ex-wife previously, and if she appears as a financial associate on your credit files then it is worth filing a notice of disassociation with each of the 3 credit reference agencies.

The account is your name. You granted your ex access to the account. Like many people before and many to come you've been fleeced. The debt is yours to settle.

Why do so many people on this forum feel the need to be condescending when replying?

At no point has the OP attempted to shirk responsibility for this debt, so why act as if he has? He clearly states that he is willing and able to make the payments. It is clear to me that the OP is asking for advice on how, if at all, he might minimize the damage this has caused to credit record. Your comment is neither helpful or constructive.

As a newcomer i have found that a few peoples arrogant attitudes ruin what is otherwise a highly helpful community. :(
