    Hi Mrs Lurcherwalker, DH did manage to get it running and after about 10 mins the smoke stopped so we are going to run it again this evening and see what happens.

    Thank you so much for all your help, it really was invaluable in getting this lamp working :beer:

    I don`t have the same lamp but have 2 similar ones, bought in the 1970`s when there were power cuts galore.

    Gave some friends a pair when they got married a year or so later and heard some comments from other wedding guests about `when are they ever likely to use that ` Had the last laugh about a couple of months after the wedding and they had a power cut. Guess whose wedding present came in very handy.

    The wicks need to be cut dead straight across or they smoke and flicker but they are so useful when the power goes off, I wouldn`t be without them.
