Heating a room for 8p a day using flower pots

  • I'm not gonna bother with the nut and bolt method, well not at first lol. I don't have any pots lying around, so I've gotta wait to get those when I have monies :(
  • I have made a heater with 2 flowerpots and 5 tealights in an old loaf tin. I can report that it hasn't made much difference at all in our high ceilinged, quite large living room. Church candles make it warmer than it has. I'm disappointed but pleased that I only spent out on 2 flowerpots which I'll use next year in the garden anyway.
  • I had an old lamp in the front garden so I've canabilised it to make a heater. But only had one tea light. It's not throwing out much heat at the mo, but with a few more tea lights it should be enough to heat my downstairs loo so I can dry some clothes lol

I made one of these last year with pots and a long screw, nuts and washers. The main problem was the amount of soot created which coated the inside and then threatened to smolder and put black smoke into the room. Anyone else had this problem and/or found a way to combat it?

I have read that it depends on the quality of the candles, cheaper ones mean more soot.

I had a bag of tea lights that I bought from Dunhelm Mill ages ago, they don't seem to be as good as the Wilkinson ones which look to have better wicks and burn longer.
  • I bought some from poundstretchers today, they look blooming rubbish!

I put 3 in the heater, and the heat started whacking out! I've got a horse of clothes in there, I'm hoping they will be dry by morning woop!

My son is bed ridden at the mo after a car crash, drying bedding is a bleeding nightmare :)
  • I use three tea light candles in mine and it concentrates the heat. You should brush off the soot and do not use zinc coated washers and bolts
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

    How did your drying go?

I hope your son is on the way to recovery. ;)

I'm just wondering what surface these pots are suitable to be placed on?
Really want to give this a go to take the chill off a small area of a big room, thanks for sharing!
  • It's still wet! The tea lights don't stay lit for long. My lodger has given me some better ones to try.

Mine are jn a metal pie dish on ceramic tiles. Do not use poundstretcher t-lights! Lol
