Macbook Pro Backup advice needed

I have been regularly backing up the system using an old(ish) hard drive, and need to replace in case of failure. Just wondering whether there is a USB stick which would have the capacity to store these regular backups. I think I will look to buy a new HD drive and store the backups on there.

Possibly use the older drive occasionally, in the event of failure.

Just bought a Mac OS X manual from WH Smith in town, hoping to learn more about the Macbook.

Really appreciate everyone's help.
