Attendance allowance

Hi im after a bit of advice, my grandma gets Attendance allowance and ive told her to use the money from things like paying someone to do her cleaning, someone to take her shopping or to get a taxi to the doctors.

My grandma does not believe that the money is for that, so im interested to know peoples opinion on what this money is for.

Thank you in advance

  • she can spend the money on whatever she wants,if its for something to make her life easier then its money well spent
  • No one will be checking up on how she uses the money if that's what she's worried about.
  • Once the money goes into her account, it's her money, and she can choose to spend it on whatever she wants. That may be taxis, or someone to do the cleaning, or it may be spent on a toy boy!

It's absolutely up to her and nobody will ever send her a form asking her to indicate where it goes. HTH :)

    xx

This is the criteria for eligibility for AA:
You can get Attendance Allowance if you’re 65 or over and the following apply:
    • you have a physical disability (including sensory disability, eg blindness), a mental disability (including learning difficulties), or both
    • your disability is severe enough for you to need help caring for yourself or someone to supervise you, for your own or someone else’s safety

However, as has already been said, the money is your Gran's to do with as she wishes.

If it were me, I would encourage her to spend the money on making her life as easy as possible.

Just curious - what does your Gran think the money is for?

As with DLA, it is to help with the extra costs of disability -and this will very from house to house.

As she is now getting AA, you could perhaps run her income details through a site like "Turn2us", as it may give her extra help in other things (if she is on any means tested benefits or Guarantee Tax Credit)

    Lin;)
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

I'm curious, too. Do you know what she thinks the money is for?
  • My gran is old school, she thinks she isn't entitled to it even though I have told her time after time, that she is entitled to it.
I have explained that it is for help with day to day care such as taxis to go shopping, someone to do cleaning/jobs around the house, but she just will not listen and gets herself uptight.

I went through a similar thing with my parents - Mum, in particular.

I spoke to a really nice advisor from the DWP who then talked to Mum directly and told her that it was important to use the money to make her life easier because that's why the government gave it to her!

We have just applied for AA as my husband has Alzheimer's. It will be used for help around the home (cleaning gutters, garden maintenance, help in the home if necessary).
