Wedding cake insurance?

Options
Please help. My daughter gets married in two weeks time. Her aunt makes wedding cakes in her spare time, she makes quite a few for friends and family. She has made my daughters cake, the hotel where the wedding reception is being held is looking for her to produce insurance to protect them from claims etc. This is the first time that she has been asked to produce insurance by a hotel.

Is it possible to get insurance for a wedding cake? I am sure someone on this site knows the answer to this question.

I think the first thing is to be clear about what insurance they are looking for - "insurance against what, exactly?"?

It's not clear whether they want insurance that covers your aunt for any damage she might cause, whilst on the hotel's property. It might be nothing to do with the cake  .... need to get the hotel to be clear about what they're looking for

Sorry for not making myself clear.

As the wedding cake is being made off premises, they are classing her as an outside caterer. They do not want to be held responsible for any events that occur as a result of the cake. I suspect that they don't think it will explode, so it must be against food poisoning.

Can I get low cost insurance cover for this?

Public liability insurance, which is a bit strong considering it's a family member.

I'd suggest whoever is insisting on this at the hotel is a bit of jobs worth.

I don't think it's the cake that needs to be insured, as such.

As AlanM says - they are asking that Auntie has her own insurance to cover "her business". Public liability would cover her for anything that she was responsible for - whether it's the cake or any "accident" that she had e.g. which damaged hotel property, whilst on their premises.

As AlanM says ... jobsworth!
