As a ftb your the ones in the driving seat if the chain is broken above you, then you should tell your sellers to move out, somebody has to break the chain somewhere.
A chain of 5 is big, I am sure Phil Spencer was on the tv saying that a chain of 4 only has a 14% chance.
The stats for the success rate for chains involving 2,3,4 etc properties would be very interesting and handy to have at your fingertips.
As vintage says, perhaps those above in the op's chain are a bit too comfortable. I would start throwing my toys around and see what happens. Don't pull out or threaten to, but maybe Start with just telling ea that your mortgage offer has an expiry date and you are starting to look at other properties.0 -

Friday I was told that we are waiting on "inquiries" for that property. It seems to be one thing after another and therefore am trying not to get my hopes up. What are the chances that we will complete within 5 weeks?
You may find that with Xmas approaching that matters might speed up.
Any number of issues can cause delay.0 -
Hi - thanks for all your replies, I did think it was a "how long is a piece of string" question...only time will tell I guess

I think not. More of a seller's market at the moment.0 -

That's a long time; the house must feel like it's part of you. Hope you're prepared to leave all the memories behind; it's really unnerving just how a place keeps you grounded and a move especially after such a long time is a big thing.
Good luck.Mornië utulië0 -
I am also in the middle of buying at the moment, 6 weeks in on Thursday. My final search is due back tomorrow. I have set my target for December 11th but have to admit that this is becoming unlikely, even with constant phonecalls to my conveyancer and good communications with my buyers and sellers. Witchy1066 my buyers are beginning to make very impatient noises and I am very concerned about this happening, but I don't know if there is anything else I can do!0

It's not a buyers market everywhere!
If someone gave me an ultimatum like that I would tell them I am pulling out with them!
House chains are about give and take not all about what one person wants!0 -

thank you for the good wishes:)
as it happens I'm not a sentimental person and when I had drips landing on my head from a broken roof tile it kinda galvanised me into action, decision made,I'm off to a new build;)
Will still come back to see my mates and work is fine about transferring me down the road(about 3 miles). This house is too big for me,a brand new 2 bed shoebox will suit me well lol.
btw the only person jumping up and down about completing early was the sales rep on the developement,my buyer is in rented until february so he's not pushing me.Done all that's needed my end so it's up to the solicitors, guess I've been lucky so far.mortgage free 3/10/12:)0 -

In that case, that's a good move. A new, guaranteed place to get your head down is all you need. I bet you never look back.Mornië utulië0
