As the clock has already lost time, it's quite likely the rest of the BIOS settings have also reverted to factory default.
Can you tell me what that means for someone who hasn't a clue ta?
Apart from the issue below everything seems to be running fine.

Finally got a new battery. Also blew out several years of muck. :D Everything fine except on the first boot up of the day or after it has been off for a while, I now get a warning 'cpu fan fail or fan speed too slow.' With an option to press F1 to continue or to disable the warning in BIOS. I downloaded some utilities and fan speed and temperature seem fine. So far I haven't disabled the warning.
I checked in BIOS and it looks like the warning is set to kick in if the speed drops between 800 rpm

I worry about getting a shock poking around a computer innards. A repair shop told me I should switch it off but keep it connected and the power supply on. Can this be right?

Touch a metal radiator first to discharge any static on your body.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Dont get fingerprints all over the new battery, handle it with a tissure

That would certainly be true for the glass surface of a halogen lamp, but a CR3032 battery has nickel-plated surfaces, and a bit of finger-sweat isn't going to be a problem.

Handling the battery will cause problems with corrosion which reduces the contact on the battery over time.

With a halogen lamp it is more obvious as the grease from your finger burns on the hot glass.

Just be careful where you hold it.

if you turn on your PC and it automatically connects to the net, like many do, then just do this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314054

I've had that before. I fixed it by lowering the warning rpm. The cause was the fans taking a couple of seconds to get up to speed and the warning being triggered before the fans were spinning fast enough.
