Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

My 2 y/o gets blue lips and purple extremeties if it gets lower than 16'C. She is layered up today.. it is about 17' in most of the house and I have a little heater in this 1 room. I am going to get some baking done later and cook dinner so hopefully the rest of the house will warm up but I think it might be time to bob our heating on!!!

Colder temperatures mean damp can accumulate and fungus breed putting you at risk of chest infections .. a bit warmer means your home is drier and mould doesn't grow.

You are obviously concerned and I think this matter is far too important to ask for opinions on an internet forum where people will give well-meaning opinion but it is just that. If it was me, especially with an infant in the house you are concerned about, I would contact my local health advise service/ GP practice etc.

    All the best

  • I'd say no lower than 16C if you're all wrapped up well.

Now the house has warmed up I can feel a definite draft coming from the front door.

We have thick heavy door curtains already, I think i need to make a draft excluder.

You can roll up a towel or blanket to use there for now, it will make a big difference. :)

  • Heat is definitely important for keeping damp at bay. Black mould is dangerous, especially for children.

Because of that, I dry my windows every morning and open them on the catch once the hearings off in the morning until it turns on over lunch.

The health of our children is always most important...

I also stopped drying clothes on racks as no matter how aired the room or heated we'd get black mould. I now swallow the expense of the tumble drier.

I have my porch door closed (with draft excluder) I have lined curtains for windows and doors and also close off the kitchen as it has no heating. I have a thermometer in 2 bedrooms and the lounge. Because the thermastat isn't an indication of the actual temperature I've found.

Ps. I hope you can upgrade your boiler soon, our bill dropped significantly when ours was upgraded in the old house (1/3rd)

My sister in law made me one out of an old duvet and packets of rice! Best one I've ever had :)

  • Regarding getting mould from clothes drying -

We have found that a dehumidifier is a better plan than using a tumble drier on wash day. It sucks all the water out of the clothes and keeps the room dry too so it's serving 2 purposes whereas a dryer or hanging clothes on the radiator or a rack can be putting moisture back into the room.
  • We always used a dehumidifier... With a family of 4 it's just too much washing (3 racks, twice a week plus bedding). It still took 2-3 days to dry... I ended up using an oil filled radiator in the depths of winter...

Now we have the tumble drier, our bills have hardly increased if at all.

It's energy efficient, heats the room too... And has sensors so you only use what you need to get things dry.

    That's my experience anyway x

  • The bathroom at nana's had ice on the wall. And she said wear a coat til May is out.

Our heating is on 24 hrs a day, hall set at 17. No thermo radiators, all on full blast. Lounge is about 18 without regulation. Overnight goes to 14, and day to 12.

Always wear a vest, sleep in jim jams.
