Definitely a place for more secure rental accommodation but no one seems to be rushing in to provide it private or social. I don't think BTL is a ideal solution for long term secure renting.

The amazing thing about the programme is that it didn't mention the underlying cause once, AFAICT. And that is lack of houses caused by lack of available land with planning permission caused by poor planning policy. And that comes back to Government (national & local) to sort out.

It could be legislated that offering some form of long-term secure tenancy would attract some kind of additional tax-break.

It's already relatively complicated, I doubt that one more rule would make a huge difference.

Why should another tax break be given?

BTLs already have the advantage over owner occupiers.

Perhaps owner occupiers should get tax relief on their mortgage payments and repairs, maintenance and improvements?

I know that BTL landlords are the biggest villain in the opinion of some posters. But if BTL didn't exist where would the rental properties come from.

of course your are quite right:
I know nothing of your views on taxation but most people say that they would like the tax system simplified because it's too complicated but in practice their answer to many issues is further complication

Like the current government- committed to tax simplification in principle but have actually complicated it a great deal.

the way to get some-one to cry on TV is to ask a question and then keep
silent... they fill the void by crying

obviously depends upon the circumstances but works most of the time

why would any sane person cry because they used a foodbank?

Maybe because he feels like a failure, his job is to provide for his family.

Do you know anything about him?, his personal circumstances?

I don't agree, If more land was released for building then developers will drip feed properties on the market purely to keep the prices up.

What do developers gain from flooding the market with properties ?.
