Security Camera to to stop Thieving

My house got hit last night. The burglar cleaned my wife out of all her jewelry, no less than $10,000!

Looking for a security camera we can install on the building. Where I can remotely view, and support night vision. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

And maybe get an in-house safe, one sufficiently built into the structure so it can't easily be removed. That way there is added protection for your valuables.

Pity they didn't reduce the size of the picture before they posted it...

Does it show that some miscreant has stolen bricks from the end of the wall?

A camera isn't going to stop theft, but may make it more likly to catch who did it.

Its not a daytime when the sun is out pictures you need to be looking at its the performance when it is dark/overcast that's more important.

You're wasting your money with a camera - unless your burglar looks directly at it in good light and you have a very good one, you'll get little that will identify anyone.

Having been to the US and Canada I am amazed at the very poor household security you have. Single glazed windows right next to the door lock that has a knob on the inside to unlock it, no window locks on single glazing, for example. An alarm and making it as difficult as possible for the burglar to get it is the way to go. Security lights to light up the burglar at night as he approaches - and so on.

I'm not sure in Canada, but in the UK quite often local police stations have officers who will come around and look from the burglars point of view and will point out poor spots of security. As you have been hit, you will already know what area they used to get in, so need to improve on that, but also other areas, even things simple as making gates and fences higher, with padlocks on the locks to prevent back access. If they have to break in towards the front, they will either move on and do your neighbours, or be more noticable.

Cameras can help, but they don't prevent break ins. You ideally want HD cameras recording 24/7 on a loop, but ones that will work in the dark as well. You want cameras all over the view from your house outside, as well as some inside that would be hidden.

Doors need to have proper locks on, and added locks in cases of things like patio doors. All windows need a lock on. Don't leave the keys close by ether.

Get a fixed in hidden safe, you can often fix them very adequately in the attic space, or down in basements, but keep both of these entrances locked, and use a proper key number, rather than 1234, etc. It should be a fire safe as well, and keep all documents and jewellery in there.

The last you can do is go for a proper alarm, wired in, sensors everywhere, and attached to a legitimate company. It might not stop a burgular, but it will limit the time they have in there.

Another thing to consider is just how stretched your local law enforcement is. If it will take them 30 mins to get to your house, prevention can only be the cure. (whether it's down to other crimes, or your location, rural etc)

Essentially this works in any country. The harder you make your house to break into, the more likely they go elsewhere. You may feel like you're in a fort, but that means when you're not in there, it is a fort, and people don't like breaking into forts.

Also please remember that once you get hit and all the nice stuff goes, they potentially will be back, after all you will claim on insurance, and they already know exactly what you had before and what would likely be replaced. Don't allow them the second chance, get work done asap.
