Adjusting the mileage on your policy
Hi, I've got a car I barely drive and I'm trying to sell it but so far no luck. I was talking about it with my friend and he said are you sure the mileage on your policy is correct?
Since I took my policy out I have changed jobs and now instead of a 25 mile round trip per day I do 2 and that's when I drive. I've calculated my mileage on a generous estimate and I'll be lucky to do 1,000 miles a year. I'm sure the amount I told the insurance company would have been 2,000 - 3,000 miles more than this. Should I call them and ask them to change it? Will this affect my premiums (up or down)?
Sorry to ask a silly question but I don't know very much about cars or car insurance so I'm a bit lost!
Thanks

Did you actually inform your insurance company that you had changed job, it can make a difference and can may costyou more depending on what it is.
I told my insurance company that I had retired and they promptly put the premium of £50:eek:make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

No but my change in job is literally from one job to exactly the same job at a different company. My job title hasn't even changed! Should I inform them I work in a different office but do exactly the same thing?0 -
GF tells me before she was on our policy her Quotes were +£10 for every 1000 miles covered when Quoting with Tescos0

Well £30 odd quid off my insurance would be better than nothing! I'll give them a ring!0 -
You don't need to tell them you've changed job if it's stil the same type of work. Sometimes you can work it cheaper by calling yourself something correct but different eg my wife retired early on ill health grounds so she could be housewife, retired or not working on medical grounds. The not working for medical reasons usually comes out cheapest.
Changing the estimated annual mileage from 3000 to 1000 is unlikely to make any difference and if you change it midway through the year they will probably hit you with an admin charge which can be around £50 for some companies.0 -
Be careful- there might be a £35 admin charge for each amendment, if it it were me I would do nothing.0

As mentioned you may save £20 but they may charge £70 admin fee.
If you say you do 1000 miles they may actually increase the premium. I found going below 4000 made zero difference. 6000 saved a couple of £ and the difference between 6000 and 12000 was neglible.
Wait until the renewal then ask.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Thanks guys I didn't know about the admin charge. I'll sit tight for the minute and hope it sells, my insurance won't come up again for another 8 1/2 months so hopefully I will sell it before then!0

Might not be cheaper, might cost more.
At the start of the year, I was doing quotes with Direct Line on a possible 2nd car.
It was actually cheaper to state 6000 miles rather than 3000 miles.
Strange but true. But as others have said, admin fees will more than eat up any possible saving.0
