Dyson DC40 vacuum cleaner faulty

Evening

Purchased the Dyson DC40 today. The brush bar is not rotating when the machine is switched, tried the grey button for the brush, makes no difference. I will be returning the machine tomorrow for a refund but would like to find out if others have had similar problem and what their opinions are on the DC40 and if there are any other vacuum cleaners you can recommend.

I am disappointed to what appears to be very cheap plastic finish to the Dyson- much preferred the old style.

The Vax Air range is a good alternative to the upright Dyson vacuum cleaners:

  • Ring the Dyson helpline, they are brilliant & will either fix it over the phone or replace it for you.

A Vax Air vacuum had been my 2nd choice and now wished I had gone for that, but had gone for the Dyson as I had a Dyson (old style)previous to what I have now and it had worked fine until Mr B decided to use it to hoover up bits of plaster.

Will not be contacting Dyson as the product is faulty so will be returning it to where it was purchased for a refund. Having had a wee look on the internet, it looks like its a common problem.

The one thing I have noticed is that a lot of the vacuum cleaners feel like they are made with cheap plastic, regardless of the make.

I have a DC40 and yours appears to be working in the same way as mine.

Having switched it on with the ON/OFF button, you then need to pull the handle back out of the vertical position before the brush bar rotates.

    This working as it should.

A wee bigger look on the internet is needed. ;)

Page 8 of the Operating Manual shipped with the product says (amongst other things):
    CARPETS OR HARD FLOORS
    • The brush bar will always default to ‘ON’ (spinning) each time you switch the appliance ‘ON’ and recline it for cleaning.
    • The brush bar will not rotate when the appliance is upright.
    • To switch the brush bar off (e.g. for delicate rugs and hard floors):
    – switch the appliance ‘ON’
    – recline the appliance
    – press the brush bar ‘ON/OFF’ button – the brush bar will stop spinning.

As above, it's supposed to do that-the brush bar drive engages only when you recline the handle. It's been a design feature of Dyson uprights since the original DC01.
If it did not, then the brush bar would spin when you were using the wand and onboard tools.

  • My Dyson had problems digesting plaster.
Yes they do seem very plasticky these days, I've now got a Miele cat and dog vacuum cleaner and its been absolutely brilliant.
    I can thoroughly recommend it.

Plaster dust is about the worst thing you can feed any vacuum. The filtration won't catch all of it (too fine), so some will go through the motor and quickly kill it.
Domestic vacs aren't intended to pick up commerical grade waste.

  • My brush bar broke after 4 years of use.. so I phoned them up, they did some clever troubleshooting - couldn't fix it so they've sent me a brand new 'head' attachment (worth £80). I popped that on and it now works.

I was very happy with Dyson

It may cost £80 but it isn't "worth" £80.

You can buy an entire vacuum cleaner just as good if not better than a Dyson for £80.

Well, they 'cost' £70 (ebay) - £80 (Dyson direct) - appropriating a 'worth' of roughly what they cost.

Considering I would have needed to buy a new vac, the 'worth' was greater than the cost of the part to me.

Before my dyson, i had gone through a vac a year. My initial outlay is still better value than buying cheap cleaners that break. If I get a few more years out of it, then I'll be very happy. Next time, I'll be getting one from Costco so I can return 'for new' if it breaks.
