Maybe tell them that you possibly ticked the savings box by mistake, and that you intend using it to receive income and pay bills.

There is no problem at all telling them the truth - that you intend to use it for savings. I opened 2 online selecting that option without issue. When I opened the 3rd over the phone I told them it was for savings and the 3% interest. They said that was fine.

Could be as simple as the fact that you already have 3 other bank current accounts. So why would you need another.
  • I'll send off the appeal and see what happens I suppose.
Worst case they still say no - then in 3 months or so I'll try again (assuming rates haven't changed drastically by then!)

    Thanks for all your advice!

  • Just to update any future reader who might find this post useful.

After exchanging a few letters with someone at Bank of Scotland, they told me I was 'rejected' online as I don't live in Scotland, therefore the automated system can't handle me having a local branch 400 miles. But - on calling them up to explain that I don't need a local branch, I just want 3% interest on a £5000 deposit (assuming I meet the monthly criteria) they were happy to process the application and even removed the second credit search from my file.

So I guess two lessons learnt - sometimes it pays to talk to a human, and appealing is never a bad thing.
