Advice On Re-Staining / Touch Up Pine Bed & Mango Wood Sideboard

Hi i bought a second hand pine bed frame that needs some work to make it look nice again, im hoping with the bed i can give it a very light rub and clean and go over it with some stain and cloth, i dont want to rub it all down to the bare wood etc, im not looking for perfection but i want to make it look a lot better than it is. So what method should i use and what products should i use to stain it? Pics below.

Im also wanting to restain this sideboard and matching coffee table, its mango wood, next replica furniture off ebay, the stain is uneven and dried out in many areas, i dont mind stripping this back to the bare wood as its flat and square i can use my sander. So what method should i use and what products should i use to stain it?

The bed looks varnished so you would need to use either a varnish with a stain in it or strip it completely to stain it with a cloth.
We had a pine bed and painted it antique white, it looks really good.
For the sideboard I suppose it depends what has been used on it already, oiled or lacquered? If it's a Next replica check whether it's solid or veneer.
If it's veneer be very careful if you choose to sand or strip.0 -

thanks for the reply.
Yeah the bed does look varnished although its likely been sprayed on, would i be able to touch up the bare areas with a varnish stain or would i need to varnish the full surface, the slats are not bad so maybe i could get away with just doing the corner posts and the horizontal rails, would i be able to varnish over the existing varnish?
The sideboard is not veneer, it has a very dull finish so it may just have been oiled but i dont know much abouty these things so i could be wrong, its always been a dull finish.0 -
On the bed I doubt you would match the colour well enough for you to touch up certain areas. I would be inclined to sand it lightly and re-varnish it all. You can go over varnish but I would lightly sand first.
Hard to say with sideboard, if you stain it again, you will just make the darker areas even darker? There are oils or waxes which contain stain but it would really depend what it's currently coated or treated with.0 -

Ok thanks, as you say it would be hard to match, ill try and find the closest match and do everything apart from the slats. In terms of sanding how fine a sandpaper should i use or will steel wool or scotch brite be abrasive enough?
the sideboard, its definately not coated like varnish as the woodgrain has always been evident ie not coated with anything, would this mean that its likely oil or wax? So sanding wqould not remove this fully ?0 -
I would go for a light sand on the bed. Bear in mind that the bare bits will be a lighter colour when you varnish as colour builds.
Sideboard could be either tbh, I had a waxed bookcase and removed wax with cif and a scourer! much lighter colour than yours though. There are specialist cleaners on the market which remove oil/wax coatings but I don't know how they might affect the colour.0 -

Thanks, i will coat the bare bits first then apply a coat of varnish stain. A light sand firsth though.
As for the sideboard im not sure what it has been treated with, so i may need to expeirment a bit with it. :j0
