Full address needed for refund on faulty goods.

Just been to exchange/get refund on something bought yesterday which was missing parts.
The shop had no more stock so needed to refund.
Had the receipt and card used.
To complete the refund the shop insisted that they needed my full postal address as the computer wouldn't process it without.
I'm not keen on giving out my address needlessly to companies as I don't want to end up on their database and get bombarded with junk mail.
Any views on this before complaining to head office (there are other issues I wish to address as well), which was the only advice the staff could give.

The Sale of Goods Act does not require consumers to give their name and address to exercise their rights so the shop can't insist you do that before letting you reject the goods. If the member of staff can't override the till's workflow then you might not get anywhere without a fight though.0

Wasn't a large national electronic retailer was it?Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0

Argos will always ask for Name, Postcode and house number. This is so they have a record and that you are not doing this on a regular basis as their system would flag it up. Also it logs the refund to you, so they cant accuse the staff member from taking the money from the tills themselves.0

B&Q always ask for postcode and house number whenever we return anything, never had any junk Mail from them yet. Perhaps smaller businesses could sell your address on if they were dodgy.0
