Employers have always(long time) had the option to just terminate up to one year for all employees and now it is two years.

Non renewal is a termination, employees that have 2 years service it needs to meet the termination rules just like a permanent, redundancy is one of the fare options and that triggers a redundancy payment.

But why didn't your union tell you this? I'm not expecting you to know enough to be able to ask the right questions before strike action.

The whole point of this forum is for people to ask for advice, not to be called names, but I guess new posters are easy targets....
  • lulu650 makes a very good point. There is a lot of peer pressure involved in strike situations and I am not passing any comments whatsoever about the rights or wrongs of this, but the Union should have been aware of the position of contract workers and advised them not to participate in the strike and their colleagues of the reason why.

Admittedly I used to work for them over 5 years ago, but everyone where I worked was aware that was the situation

I took early retirement from the civil service in 2012. A month or so before my retirement date a strike took place. I had taken part in the previous 2 strikes but didn't this time.

I did get some pressure from my colleagues and union reps but a more experienced rep told me the union didn't expect people about to retire to strike.

I suppose the reason was to ensure you didn't lose part, all be it small, of your final pension.

Yes that is the reason. Another would be a pregnant woman who may lose some maternity pay
