Almost daily at the moment, Lenny just absolutely loves to find stagnant water or puddles of mud!

I have two cavaliers, one having a very long coat, and only bath them two or three times a year; ie when they look grubby (one is nearly all white). They don't have a doggy smell.

Some of the grooming sprays have gorgeous perfumes that can last for several days, refreshing if the dogs get slightly damp and Beaphar do an odour neutralising spray (for spraying onto the dog).
  • Mine has one every 2-3 months in the summer months, as he usually plays in water in the garden (hosepipe play!) most weekends. In winter, once every 4 weeks.

Mine is obsessed with being blow-dried after as will sit next to the hair dryer waiting for his pamper!
  • Hi.
Thanks for the reply's reading them I think it may be a combination of things.... Bedding not getting washed enough and espcially in this weather, hubby sends her to bed when she comes in from a walk wet which doesn't help the bed smells. Her coat is not dirty and doesn't feel dirty, so will go along the lines of washable bedding

My friends wash their dog weekly.

None of us can stand old dog smell. Neither can the dog. He loves his hose down and shampoo.

Don't forget your husbands smoke will be embedded in the dog fur too.

10 years ago A friend of mine gave up smoking after 50 years and the house still smells of smoke to this day.

You could look into wipeable beds - e.g. Tuffies. They don't absorb dirt and odours apparently (with two big dogs, they're a bit out of my price range at the mo..but definately considering them when I have some cash to splash)

Is it actually good to bath a dog so often?

Read somewhere that twice per year should be enough, something with skin oil etc.

I wish - Zara is long haired, double coated and tends to stink if she decides on a swim in stinky water then takes ages to dry so stinks even more.

When she stinks - she gets a bath.

Used to take her to a groomer every 2 months or so but it is so awkward to get there that started giving her a bath at home - absolute madness and 3 days cleaning afterwards so may go back to a groomer next time.

But then - I live in a flat, do nto have a garden so this is a problem as far as bathing a large long haired dog is concerned. Need 2 people to bath her anyway ...

Too much bathing will remove protective oils. This means that the coat loses its waterproof qualities and so absorbs more dirt.
  • I used to bathe Rocky (well, shampoo him and hose him off) about twice a year when he really reeked! The rest of the time I would take him to the river or the coast for a swim to freshen him up.

He's going to the doggy swimming pool once a week at the moment, so he gets a good shampoo and shower whilst he's there to wash the chlorine out. It's not his favourite part of the activity :rotfl:
