Can anyone help please.. I downloaded System Mechanic software as recommended on the Freebie board but now, whenever I login to my PC, it tries to "Scan" but cannot find the cdrom which is required for this. It does not let me exit from the screen and I have to alt, control, delete to stop the scan. I have an HP all in one PSC and find that I cannot get into HP directory without this Scan taking place.
I am not a knowledgeable person in terms of computers and would be glad if someone was able to tell me how to correct this situation without having to know a lot about systems.
Thank you.

Can you press F8 as the boot sequence starts (just after the BIOS screen) to get into safe mode? If you can then you may be able to delete the entry if it's in the startup folder. You an also try typing msconfig in the run command line to stop it starting up.
If you can boot into an account that will run you could also try this

Thank you PaulK for your advice. Unfortunately, I am a bit of a dinosaur as regards the PC and I am not sure if I followed your instructions to the letter. I did press F8 after I pressed alt, cont, del but nothing happened but i am not sure what the BIOS screen is.
When do I type MSCONFIG---where is the run command line?
Lastly, I did download the file you sent but I was unable to recognise which file, if one was there, that I should disable.
I apologise for my dearth of knowledge. I would understand in the circumstances if you felt that you could not help me any further.0 -
Start - click Run, type MSCONFIG in the box - click ok, select the startup tab near the top, then un-tick the problem program, click apply, then okay, it will then ask you to restart the PC.0

Tap the F8 key repeatedly as soon as the computer boots up and goes past the BIOS screen, you should then get a boot menu up. Can you take a screen shot of what appears when you run either the startup cpl tool or msconfig? There are multiple screens but I don't mind working through them one at a time.
You should be able to find in one of the screens a listing for either the software tool (system mechanic) or the file in question (scan.msi).0 -
Thank you both very much for trying to help an inexpert user like myself. I don't think I explained my problem very well because this morning when the message to insert the appropriate CD-ROM came up, I put in my installation disc for the all-in-printer which I got when I bought the PC. This seemed to work and I did not get the message again, so hopefully the problem has been fixed. Once again, thank you for your interest in helping me.0
