Which brands would you recommend for reliability in laptops and desktops please?

The problem is within brands they have different levels of quality depending on the target consumer.
Eg I would happily recommend HPs Elitebook or Envy line but be more cautious over their pavilion line. even then a certain model might be a dud...0 -

Laptop £350 max
General internet browsing, storing music on. Very light use in general, maybe a bit of word processing but nothing major.
Desktop preferably under £450
Internet, storing photos (lots) and music. Mainly used for photo editing, desktop publishing, storing genealogy data and a lot of word documents.
