No CH/HW for Over 3 Weeks!

Getting a boiler fault diagnosed, liaising between engineer and owner/landlord, obtaining quotes for replacement boiler, obtaining said boiler, allowing for mistake in boiler purchased (mistakes DO happen!), installing new boiler....
If everything went right first time, engineers were freely available, boiler was available off the shelf etc etc, then yes,in theory itcould be done in a week.
In the real world, whether you are a tenant or own your own home, you'd be lucky to achieve this in 3 weeks, and could easily belonger.
My biggest concern here is your reference to a 'handyman'. Is the guy doing the installation GasSafe registered?0 -
Agree with G_M when my boiler exploded and dumped hot water from our upstairs closet into our kitchen it took 3 weeks for a new one to be up and running. It required two visits from a Gas Safe Engineer who also happens to be a family member. Now i know for a fact he is very busy and his calendar is almost always full as are most good plumbers.
We had to agree suitable times we were both free to do the visits, this was easy really because i am almost always home but if i was working? it takes time to find suitable dates. The first exploratory visit happened in the evening when he normally never works but as we are family he made the extra effort, i suspect he would have turned the job down otherwise. The diagnosed fault was catastrophic and a new boiler was needed. Took me a few days to choose/review makes/models and he ordered in the new boiler.
Finally we had to agree a day/time both of us were free all day for the new boiler fitting and removal of the old one. There was an added complication as a new hole for the flue had to be drilled which was something neither of us expected.
So there we have it i know the engineer, owned my own house outright, had the money to pay up front and it still took 3 weeks. You have none of those advantages 2-6 weeks range sounds pretty reasonable depending on the circumstances to me. The most i would do as a LL would be to ensure you had a couple of extra halogen heaters and that's it. You need to accept you have another link in the chain to getting this fixed so things are a bit slower than normal but its nothing any LL can do much about. When using the housing forum please use the sticky threads for valuable information.0 -
Wow, I remember being 8 months pregnant, old house, our boiler packed up, it would have cost thousands to replace, then the final blow, the emersion heater went just before xmas... the long story short, we managed boiling kettles to do the washing up and bathing ourselves for 4 weeks, ( and several times over 2 years when the emersion kept on blowing) and managed for 2 YEARS with those flat heaters you mentioned, just heating the rooms we needed.
We just got on with it. It will be over before you know it.0 -
Crikey, where on earth do you live for it to have been 10 degrees inside in the last few weeks? The coldest my house has been over the past week, now the weather seems to have some changed from the very mild weather we've been experiencing, is 17.5 degrees & this is a property with very poor insulation due to build type. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
It then took the LL another week to get back to us saying the handyman will fit the new boiler. A week later the handyman arrives with a new boiler but it's the wrong type - a combi boiler but we have an aring cupboard with a tank upstairs.
Probably just me being thick (not too unusual) but I'm lost. You say a combi boiler is wrong because you have an airing cupbaord with a water tank in it. How is that water in the tank heated? You mention that you have no heating or hot water which normally means it's just one boiler doing both which would be a combi boiler. It's someone else's fault.0
