I hear dripping in my house when it rains

I live in a mid terraced, 1930's house.
The fireplace is no longer used. I have air vents, 1 upstairs and my fire opening us covered by a plinth of some sort of plinth.
A surveyor neighbour says it's no unusual as did a roofer local to me.

My father and a friend builder says NO THAT IS NOT RIGHT!!

Im worried now and would like someone to tell wether the dripping I can hear is ok and normal.

Please can someone advise me?

Thank you

  • I could hear a dripping sound, it was in my old fireplace. I asked a roofer to take a look and he said the chimney pot needed replacing as the rain was coming right through

Could it be the same for you?

Where can you hear the dripping noise strongest?
have you been in roof and had a look to see if anything is loose, can you see daylight coming in anywhere?
we have dripping noise in our 1970's semi sometimes but it's from the rainwater downpipe...

Roof inspected as also the loft. No signs of problems. Roof had flashing done to chimneys. Pot on chimney is fine also.
I have the dripping mostly in fireplace and also air vents in adjoining rooms only as these are only vents.

Thank you so far for your assistance.

I have similar dripping when it rains but only in the fireplace. It hasn't got any worse in the 7 years that I have been here.

Well that's reassuring to know thank you. I believe when it gets hot, Wha ha ha ha, yeah right in UK, it gets dispersed via natural method itself. Thing is I now live in Manchester and it's raining mostly.

I feel a little better now thank you but I feel it will always nitpick at me when I hear it.

Thanks again. I'll leave this open a while and see what else comes in if any.

    Thank you

OP you seem to have a very valid concern. If this was happening to me I wouldn't rest until I saw where the drips were landing. Even if it is in the fireplace.

If there's rainwater dripping in the chimney you could solve it as easily as fitting a chimney cowl.

Don't ignore your instincts though - I usually find mine are right.

The cowl's have been confirmed as being fine.

The cowls can't be fine...who told you they were, and why can't they trace the source of the dripping?
