Did you happen to make a note in a notepad that you asked the supervisor about this specific issue? This is worth doing with any situation where something is unclear. Particularly if you email them with the information then they cannot deny it later! If you word it to them along the lines of 'thank you for clarifying X and that I should do Y' I have made a mental note to always follow this advice. It makes it impossible for them to deny or at least they'd pick up on it and say what you were meant to do if it was in fact a misunderstanding.

They can't prove you didn't ask. It's your word against the supervisor. The supervisor has more to lose and has therefore decided its best they deny all knowledge.

If it is minor then I don't see any reason why they can't just issue a memo to all staff clarifying the issue so that *everyone* knows not to do it. Going to disciplinary seems rather heavy handed which suggests it has some underlying issue which is far more serious then you realise.

  • Your p45 will also show your previous employer until you sign on.

This is an area where job hopping temps reign supreme.

    Bad assignment? Simply airbrush it!

    references these days are usually:
"yes he/she worked here from x date to y date"
    nothing more, nothing less.
I'm told (by a friend who worked in HR until 2 years ago) that they don't even need to say why you left (unless it's a child protection issue I think)
They don't even need to give a reference which in its own right is just as damming
Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked
  • I'd fight it tooth and nail if it were me and I knew I had done it in good faith...are there any witnesses who may have heard the conversation?

  • something like this happened to me too, I got called up to higher management and stuck the line manager in as she was the cause of the situation!! in the end my life was a misery at work tbh but I stuck in their and played their games too! I started by turning my phone off and they could not call and harass me no more!! I told them if they wanted to find me then go round my run and catch me! it was great fun and in the end the line manager and her underdog got moved to another place, im still in my same job that I love and the new staff are ace x so stick in there and show them your no push over I did and im happy as can be :)
  • If it's any help the Last 4 Employers I've had do NOT do references.

I've had to provide two people that know me as former employers have refused to give references.

All they will confirm is the dates you worked there (if they reply at all)

If you're concerned start applying for work now. There's nothing more satisfying than being off on full pay and knowing that you can hand in your resignation if you get a job. They may not even make you work your notice!

    Take care

I am allowed to change certain details, provided i follow the right procedure. In this case, I wasn't 100% sure which was the right procedure, so I asked the manager, who OK'd it. (as I said above, the manager is saying i didnt show her anything, whether shes denying it for her own good or she genuinely cant remember I dont know) I have always asked senior members of staff if ive been unsure of a certain procedure, and have only ever gone through with something if ive been told its ok to do so, so when this happened I did what I would normally do and thought it was ok.

Always create a trail, ask in email, or in writing, if there is a discussion follow up with an email. as discussed can you confirm X,Y,Z is the correct process/procedure/amendment...
