    tried that but it would not let me says but just stops & says desktop software cannot communicate with connected device any help

    Check Windows Update to see if there's an update waiting for the Blackberry (an MS fix/patch). If there's nothing there then uninstall the Desktop software and reinstall it. You may need to delete some items manually.

    Once you've reinstalled try restoring the Blackberry again.
