New power cable (universal)

Hi, can any techy person confirm that I have bought the right mains transformer/charger and lead for my Acer Aspire laptop.

The old one has died so I took it with me to a local specialist leads and accessories shop. He seemed certain that the one I bought is perfectly ok for my laptop but I am just a bit anxious as the old one said 65 watts, 19 volts, input 100-240 volts. The new one says 90 watts, 12 volts in stages up to 19.5 volts, input 100-240 volts.

The 65 watts and 90 watts is the bit I feel a bit anxious about.

Can any techie out there confirm that I am ok using this universal charger?? Don't want to blow up my lovely lappy.

Many thanks.

The extra power that the universal charger can provide doesn't matter, the laptop will consume the same power as before regardless.

All that matters is you get the polarity correct when fitting the plug that suits the socket on your laptop.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it
  • Thanks quiet Spark. I don't know what polarity means. Sorry I'm a senior and a woman for my sins. There were about 8 different connectors in the packet. 3 of them were listed as suitable for an Acer so I tried each one in the plug in on the laptop. 2 of them seemed a loose fit but the 3rd one seems a snug fit and I have been using the laptop for about 2 hours now without problem so I an hopeful that I have chosen the right one. The transformer is quite warm but then my old, original one used to get hot too.

Just explain what you mean by get the polarity right please.

He meant that if the laptop requires +ve on the inner of the connector that is what the power unit is giving. With some it is possible to choose.

As yours seems to be happily charging (check the power icon in the right hand tray to be sure) then it must be correct and you needn't worry.
  • Don't understand "+ve on the inner of the connector that's what the power unit is giving" but the powers is still at full after 3 hours online so Im happy its ok. thanks for the help. I just didn't want anything to be overpowered and blow the lappy up.

Why am I such a worrier?????
    Thanks

It's like getting a battery the wrong way round. Yours must be OK. Positive on the inner seems to be pretty much standard - I've had quite a few different laptops and every one was that way around.

In stages upto 19.5volts so what amperage or wattage will it supply at 19.5 volts?

Divide the watts by volts to get amps.

  • Thanks for your help folks. I have been up and running for 24 hours now so I'm happy to say that's a good result. I feared that it was my laptop that was at fault and was expecting to have to buy a new one. Very pleased to be up and running for £30.
