Android Phone - Quick Way Call No. in Email..

Hi

Have recently switched from a Blackberry to a Samsung S3 Mini.

The BB used to have a useful feature whereby if you were in an e-mail, text msg, or calendar entry and if you scrolled over a phone number it would recognise it and allow you to ring it directly.

Is there a way of doing this from within Android / Samsung?

I know I can copy/paste an phone number from e-mail etc but in google calendar pressing on the number simply opens up google maps. It is really annoying because I use conference calls a lot for work and I used to simply scroll over the number and ring it now I have to write it down and type it in (soooo old hat).

So, I thought I'd ask you texperts out there......

Very surprised the Samsung doesn't do this, this has been common functionality in smartphones for quite a while now. Maybe Samsung removed the functionality from their low end devices in a bid to get you to pay more for a higher end device?
  • I( have an S2 and this feature works fine on stock firmware and rooted 4.3.1:D

My old S2 (Gingerbread), Wifes S3 mini (JellyBean) and my new S4 (JellyBean) all allow copy and paste of phone numbers. A lot of the time the numbers are highlighted already so you just need to select it.

    Thanks for you comments.....

As I said copy/paste works ok in messages/email but in Google calendar it keeps bringing up Google map. I suppose that's fine normally for calendar events, I.e. where are they but, it would be great if I could have the ability to dial or copy the number from the calendar entry

Depends if it's formatted in a way the phone recognises it as a phone number and on the mail client you're using. For me it's about 50/50

Is it because the phone number has been added to the 'location' field? This would normally launch Google maps if clicked. Try adding it to the description / body of the calendar appointment.

Thanks for your comments. I'll look at how the events are 'accommodated' within Google Calendar.

Usually (historically) where we have conference call the telephone number is in the subject, for example: 'Marks Query - Tel: 1234 555 666x999999#'

The 'x' allows the phone (BB anyway) to pause and then enter the PIN automatically, with the # to complete the login but, this is just secondary to being able to simply dial from a calendar item.
