Accidentally dropped replaced iPad

Here is how it stands as I understand.
You have two ipads in your possession. One belongs to you, the other does not.
The one that does not belong to you has a smashed screen. You could keep it, but Apple will charge you for another iPad.
Up to you what you want to do, but Apple legally owns the first Ipad (that you dropped) and it was damaged while in your care.
Your options are Keep both iPads, Apple will charge you for the second iPad.
Send the original one back to Apple and hope that the insurers will accept the note. However I don't believe they will.
(The reason I don't think they will is, they are entitled to inspect, repair or refund to get a new one, but all you're giving them is a piece of paper, not a iPad so they are materially down).
If it was me I'd keep the iPad send it to the insurers, if they can fix it great I have two ipads and I can sell one, they may replace with a new (in which case sell again) or offer money to buy a new one.
It's the least amount of risk.
It's unfortunate, but you do either have to pay Apple £600 to keep the iPad or send it back to apple and pay £600 in exchange for a piece of paper your insurance company may just laugh at.0 -
Call your insurer and ask them if they will accept the note ? Seems the obvious answer to me.0

Which is why I used the words 'its unlikely...'0 -
I dropped my IPad face down onto a pavement. Smashed the screen to bits. Dropped it into an independent and four hours later it was ready. For me it was worth £100 to get it back same day rather than sod about with Apple tbhI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

It's an ipad air and I doubt a replacement screen from an independent is likely this soon.0 -
Apples suggestion that you return the new ipad, even though you have opened it and put your stuff on it already, is probably the best option as they will then not charge you another £600. You can then claim off your insurance for the smashed one - I think its unlikely the insurers will have it repaired, but that is up to them. Its not Apples fault you smashed it - and unfortunately the consequence may be a repaired ipad with a ding in it. You are more than likely to get a new one, given ipad air is so very new, but at least you will get a fully working ipad air. Accidents happen. Don't work on an ipad above flagstones next time and take more care - its no one elses fault, after all.0

Why would Apple charge you full retail price for the ipad when surely they should be only charging you for the screen being fixed? It was faulty anyway so saying it was worth the £600 is rubbish. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0

OP, do you have "new for old" cover on you home insurance?0

Because they had already sent the OP a brand new replacement.
What was apple going to do with the faulty tablet? They could either bin it, or fix it to sell as a refurbished model. If it was going to be thrown out then it wouldn't be worth anything to the company. If they plan on fixing to resell, if they charge the OP the full amount for what was already a defective product, they could fix it, then sell it again, so Apple would be quids in.There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson.
