The website explains how it works, you even quoted it. This was confirmed to me over the phone too. The discount gets applied pro-rata each time you get a bill, so if you get a bill with an electricity standing charge of £12 then your direct debit discount for that period will be £12. Gas works similarly.0

They work the way you state. What needs explaining? They are already included in the (misleading) daily standing charge. That is, they take the £42 or £52 and divide by 365 and do a subtraction. The result is the given price.0

The 0p a day and 0p a year for electric is from their own tariff.
 So just taking the gas at £191-17 a year S/C, they would on a 90 day bill give a discount of £52-50 div by 365 x 90 = £12-95.
On electric the same thing but £42 giving a discount of £10-35p.
Just looked on N power site and they give the discounts as £50 and £40 but the same principle would apply as above?
Fixed energy prices until 30th April 2015
Pay for your energy by Direct Debit or receipt of bill
£90 discount each year if you pay for both electricity and gas by Direct Debit
Annual charges are at least 4.3% lower than our Standard tariff (as at 08/10/13) for the average dual fuel Direct Debit customer until 30/4/15.

Why not just use any comp site to get your annual total, which is the only figures that matters, and will factor in all the discounts such as DD and dual fuel?No free lunch, and no free laptop 0 0

I did that macman on energyhelpline and like you say it gives the total annual spend taking in discounts etc.
I was curious as to how this particular discount was applied as there was no explanation.
A relative is going onto it and with her current tariff they just rebated her £110 at the end of each year.0
