Flat Roof replacement question

Hi - my mother in law has a flat roof over the rear of her house (sitting room) - she has received a quote from Everest for about 3k for a GRP roof. Can anyone give any views on GRP flat roof systems? - are they really worth the extra money over conventional felt & bitumen?

Many thanks

We had a firbe glass flat roof done by Rooftec a few years ago...

It does the job nicely, still looks good, has a long guarantee and wasn't much more then the rubbish felt and tar stuff that the Romans used to do.

    Hi David,

Could I fask if you are replacing a current flat roof with new flat roof due some sort of leak??

Its just that I saw my neighbour do something which I thought was quite clever and must have saved him a packet too. Instead of replacing a flat roof with another flat roof....why not build over the current leaking flat roof with a sloping roof?? You would not need to remove the current flat roof, just build over it by adding a few bricks to the end walls so it looks like a trianglualr slope.....add some timber and put on some regular roof tiles!! (Obviously get a builder to carry out this work for you!)

Pitched roofs will add greater value to your home and will cost far less than the £3k that the dodgy salemen at Everest have quoted you!!

I just thought this might give you an idea if it is applicable. It may not even apply to your case.

thanks Nags. I dont think a proper roof is possible as it would impede on the windows. but we're going to ask a builder to check this out for us.

This was 7 years ago, but I had the flat roof replaced on my double garage for £300. That was for the felt, tar, greens and a coat of silver paint on it.

It sounds a lot - £3k. Go for a conventional felt/tar. It'll last 25yrs+. Must be why its still so popular!

crankup - that's useful to know, the flat roof on the double garage of the house we are buying needs redoing. The surveyor estimated that it would be around £1000.
