Last night I brushed a crumb off the keyboard (wiped it from left to right) and must've done something. The screen locked, I couldn't do anything. The cursor moved but I couldn't close tabs, turn volume down, or even switch off. I pressed everything pressable and eventually sorted it - but what happened does anybody know? In case I do it again :D It's not touch screen.

Depends on your computer, may be a feature. I have a lenovo with Windows 8 and using touchpad swiping down with three or four fingers locks screen and swiping up similar unlocks screen.

    Which screen was it displaying?

Depending on what it was, some keystroke combinations which may have helped are:
    Alt-F4
    Ctrl-Alt-Delete
    WindowsKey-X

(Where 'WindowsKey' is the one with the Windows flag logo symbol, usually near Ctrl or Alt at the bottom of the keyboard)

I didn't know you could lock a screen - how do you do that without a touch screen ? I think that's what I did. I

What should happen after the Lock Screen appears is that you click anywhere on it, the Lock Screen picture disappears and a box shows where you type your password in. Mine is the Microsoft password used for Outlook.com etc. Click the keyboard's Enter key when done and you should be back into the computer,
