30's/40's/50's on minimum wage?

Here is an attitude I have come across a couple of times now and I am wondering how prevalent it is in today's society.
If you're in your 30's/40's/50's you must be next to useless if you're still earning the minimum wage, why when you're half way through you're working life have you not progressed any?
It ignores the fact that rather than sit on the dole some of us would rather take any old job to pay our own way, in fact this attitude more or less clumps us in with those who can't be bothered working, it ignores the fact that we opened the doors to any and every tom !!!!!! and harry looking into the country thus forcing wages down.
Is this how people really feel? When I am searching for better paid work do employers think "Why is this guy only earning min wage? He must be useless" or do they think "This guy is prepared to do what ever it takes" or perhaps they think "OK this guy will work for min wage, that's what I'll give him"
So interested in your thoughts on the subject.

Some people think there are more important things in life than money.0

Workers, and specifically the shortage of skilled ones, force wages up.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/jobs/10434498/Increasing-salary-may-not-be-enough-to-lure-jobseekers.htmlI am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.0 -
Since the introduction of the NMW it has somehow made jobs stay at that level, no company has to give anymore than that. I'll work for anything, I am no snob, if you want more money ask for it.
I was on more than minimum wage is now 5 years ago, now I earn just above it, I can't be fussy in what I earn, it's better than being on the dole, I have no aspirations as such I earn pay my way and try and enjoy my life the best way I can.
Why bring migrant workers into the equation many work low paid work too they are not keeping the wages down. We had the same in the 50's 60's they are taking our jobs attitude.0 -

Not everyone has the capability to progress up the career ladder and so will always earn a low wage. The is nothing wrong with that, if those roles were not filled those at higher levels would not be able to do their jobs.
I certainly do not blame those that have come from overseas, the majority of whom work very hard. They demonstrate a work ethic to aspire to, not to denigrate.0 -

She may have used the wrong word, but we all knew what she meant, and her point is valid.0 -
That user is fond of using the R word. Implied Muslims were a race in one post and scooted off when challenged. Am unsure whether s/he isn't very bright or likes to feign ignorance.0

Capability?, more like not everyone has the opportunity to progress up the career ladder. Also not everyone is prepared to be a total bottom kisser either.0
