Firefox says it running when its not

As the heading if I use firefox and then go into explorer and close firefox when I try to open firefox again it says it is running. What have I done. I am using window 8.1 any help please:T

Go to your Firefox icon, RIGHT click it. When a window opens, LEFT click the icon there, click Open.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Sounds like the previous instance didn't shut down properly. It is possible to kill it in Task Manager (right click on your taskbar to find it).
If you can't find it under 'applications' you'll find it under 'processes' - you can right click it and 'end process tree'.
Be cautious in there, it's possible to cause yourself problems, but killing a background firefox.exe process is safe enough.0 -
FF does have a habit of doing that .
By the time i have got to process manger its sorted itself out .0
