Nationwide Debit Card declined at petrol pump

I've got a FlexPlus debit card that does not work at petrol pumps.

Any idea why? I though it was only Nationwide's cash card that did not work with these?

Have you tried it at different petrol stations?

It's probably the petrol station telling you you should be using a Santander 123 credit card to buy petrol (for the 3% cashback).

But seriously: a Flexplus card, if it is embossed, should work. I would be surprised if they used any non-embossed cards. Best to ask Nationwide.

I have never tried my Flexplus for petrol since I use the above cashback card for it.

Actually, I haven't. Maybe it's the garage doesn't like my card. It's been declined by them on 3 different visits now. My credit card and First Direct card are fine.

Will try it at another petrol garage and see if it works.

Could the card be pin locked?

  • I have had this happen with a Post Office credit card and a Norwich and Peterborough debit card. When you contact the bank/buildingsociety, they don't know why it has been declined. Maybe something to do with the fact that you are not dealing face to face with a person but a pump. Would probably be okay if you went into petrol station office.
