refused refund

I kind of already know the answer to this and suppose I should just consider it lesson learned, but here's hoping! I run a small coffee shop located in a community centre and around 3 month back we bought a second hand till from a 'friend' (I use the term extremely loosely!) Anyway, this was just before the summer holidays, when we close. I wasn't actually around to take delivery of the till as I don't actually work on site the 'friend' turned up plugged it in to show it worked then left, this was for the centre manager who has nothing to do with our shop.Since opening after the holidays my business partner hasn't had chance to plug in the new till as there was an issue with the wiring. To try to cut the story shorter - once we had the till in place my partner came to insert a till roll which is all encased and nobody would have a reason for opening. The spool feeder was missing. I contacted the seller who said she would look for it and needless to say couldn't find it. We said we would need a refund as she sold us the till in as she stated 'working order' and for us to buy a replacement its now going to cost us more than we would have paid for a brand new till. She is of course, refusing! Do we have a leg to stand on? Its not so much about the money as the principle. This 'friend' was also an ex employee who completely took the mick whilst working for us, so I guess we are just feeling completely disgruntled.

two things to consider.
Do you want to remain firends.
If the till cost £10, then it was £10 not well spent and you got what you paid for. If it was £500, I would not remain friends.
On re reading, I assume it is an ex friend. You rant is over!0
