Speakers are speakers to me. As long as they have the right connectors on the end them its all good.

I had a mate that used to spend a fortune on the next best set and he used to go listen to this....so much better than the last set. Err sounds exactly the same to me.

Except you can get the volume to 19 instead of 18 before they dance around the room. Rather pointless when the neighbour would be booting the door in if he went over 3 on the volume.

Stereo or mono, Sounds the same to me :)

What an impressive piece of non-advice.

The DVD player from the home surround sound kit will probably have a build in amplifier for the speakers. you'd need to find a BluRay player with a built in amp but they'll be more expensive.

The only real way to do it, is to buy a BluRay player and a separate AV receiver. The home cinema surround sound kits only allow you to have surround sound from the DVD / BluRay player and not the TV.

A BluRay PLAYER has line-level outputs or digital outputs to connect to an AV amplifier, or receiver. What you had was a DVD player integrated into one unit with this amplifier.

Ideally you need a player/amplifier combined, but these will be more difficult to find without matching speakers. You'll probably also find that Sony have placed their own unique connectors on the speaker leads, so they won't fit any other make, requiring you to adapt them.

How much do you want or are able to spend?

What you've got is a DVD player, with an amplifier in the same box. Your DVD player has broken and you want to re-use the speakers. Going by Google Images, I can see a pic of the back of the unit, and the connectors are proprietary, I wouldn't bet on buying a Blu Ray that can take those connectors, but it would be a Sony I'd look for.
Anyway, looks like it's just two pins. Standard speaker connection is just the 2 bits of bare wire. You could cut the ends off the speaker wires, and attach the speaker to any proper AV amp, and buy a separate Blu Ray player. The AV amp will have terminals for at least 5 speakers. Then if your Blu Ray player breaks, you just replace it instead of the amp too.
Blu Ray £50 (or a 2nd hand PS3, that does lots more, for around £100)
AV amp £150 (or even less) brand new from Richer Sounds
Just saw your other post - to get sound from your TV, we need to know what connectors it has - what sound OUTPUTS does it have, or what's the model number. And do you have a Sky, Virgin, Freeview, Freesat recorder?

you'll need one with a built in 5.1 amplifier but i've no idea which, if any that aren't part of a home cinema bundle, come with one
