Experian credit expert where do I stand?

hi everyone, im new here so hoping ive got this in the right place.

I just have a quick question about experian credit expert im hoping i could hopefully get some advice on, so here goes

About 10 months ago i created an account with them for the 'free trial' they provide, which i never actually got to use as they send a pin to you in the mail to as their website says is needed to activate the account.

A week or so after signing up no pin arrived so i gave up and decided to cancel so i wouldn't get charged after the free trial, but without this pin i couldn't log in as my account wasn't active therefore cannot cancel.

By this time the trial had expired and the first payment had gone out, so i thought it would be easier just to cancel the direct debit so once this was done i thought it was all sorted.

Only today had i noticed a payment of £7.99 a month going out to them i wasn't aware of. I know it isn't a great amount of money but its added up.

So my question is will i be entitled to any of this back? one as the direct debit was cancelled and two i never actually activated my account but have still been charged. And if i am entilteld how would i go about doing this?

Sorry for the long read but if you have this got this far then i thank you, i look forward to a little advice :)

  • Their T&Cs state you must contact them to cancel. Did you do this?
    If the answer is no, then you didn't cancel and they're entitled to charge even if you didn't use the service by your own choice.

    I doubt you had a direct debt with them, more likely you tapped in your debit or credit card details so they have an ongoing authorisation from you.
    Have you contacted them for a pin or to discuss this? It won't just magically happen!!!!

    How did you cancel the "direct debit" (which as simeyb says is more likely a CPA on your card)?

    If you advised your bank to cancel the CPA for Experian then legally any payments that that they took after this should have been refunded by your bank. Of course after 9 months of not noticing that you were still paying (perhaps a wake up call that you should keep a better eye on your bank accounts) you're likely to have difficulty persuading the bank that you did cancel (unless you happen to have a copy of the letter or email that you sent requesting the cancellation).

    Although, even if your bank did agree that the CPA should have been cancelled and refund you (which would mean that they clawback the money from Experian), Experian would be within their rights to persue you for the money that you owe them as you failed to cancel your membership.

    By this time the trial had expired and the first payment had gone out, so i thought it would be easier just to cancel the direct debit so once this was done i thought it was all sorted. Cancelling the direct debit is not cancelling your contract. it is only cancelling a payment method.

    So my question is will i be entitled to any of this back? one as the direct debit was cancelled and two i never actually activated my account but have still been charged. And if i am entilteld how would i go about doing this? You may have a case or complaining to your bank that the DD wasn't cancelled as per your instructions. However, had the bank done so, Experian would only have chased for the money anyway.

    If you explain to Experian they might give you a break based on goodwill but I think that is your only hope of getting anything back.
