I think as long as the money is there when the direct debit is applied for (as cleared & available funds) then you should be fine

I suppose by saying 5pm they are talking about branch hours. Most internet transfers are immediate, but for example, I know if you transfer money from the monthly saver to bank account it is not as their are withdrawal restrictions so takes longer

could you not change the days of the direct debits

ie. I get paid the 23rd of the month - all mine come out either the 23rd or 25th and one on the 1st but my wages are still there for it

Let's hope all relevant banks alert all their customers urgently and emphasise funds need to be deposited on or before the banking day prior to the day on which the DD is due...ie Monday - Friday (excluding Bank Holidays). Online users have previously assumed weekend internal transfers are OK.
Many thanks to all for bringing this change to our attention.

ED, I don't think they will as the T&C's say the money should there day before (to ensure money there when funds applied for)

    But they might
  • It will be bounced, if they are the same as NatWest. You could call their lending team on Monday and see if they will pay it. No guarantees though
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009
