Mobile data on Nexus 5

Hi,
I'm just put my Virgin micro sim into my Nexus 5 and turned it on for the first time. I got the following message for about 20 minutes - "Activate Mobile Data Service - Activation can take a few minutes."
Eventually I got bored and skipped it and set up my wifi etc. Anybody know how to activate mobile data?

if its like the HTC one
drag the screen down,click the square box top right, you should see a mobile data icon
If not then go into settings and activate it within there0
