If the train is operating WiFi, as East Coast do, simply start up your browser and register for the operater's WiFi access. Switch off 3G in Settings.
If there's no WiFi on the train, go into settings, switch off WiFi and switch on 3G. Open browser. This assumes you have a valid 3G contract/provider and their SIM installed in the pad (EDIT - and, as pointed out below, that you're in range of a 3G signal mast).
Is there a reason you think you can't use it on a train?0 -
Yes they also work on planes, and boats. But I assume you mean using 3G rather than wireless...it depends (same is true for wi-fi too) there is a train journey I make often that has next to no 3G (and barely 2G) reception the train line doesn't go near any conurbations but it's only 35 minutes so I can live with that.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Well I've tried but can never get a signal but probably not doing it right. It's a long time on a train from Inverness to Crewe lol0 -

I don't mind if it's wifi or the 3G as long as it works lol0 -

the idea of 3G is that you can use it anywhere you can get signal, the same way you use internet on a phone.0

I am tempted to say something like 4 and 20 Virgins came down from Inverness , but I suppose half of the journey is via scotrail, and the rest is Virgin they have wifi but it costs depending on ticket and some of their carriages are blocked for 3G (I believe)Well I've tried but can never get a signal but probably not doing it right. Yes first half with scotrail £19 for over 55 s lol and virgin £37 so not too bad. Pays to check prices and split journeys though. It's not the end of the world if I can't get it to work I've got my kindle, paper and crosswords and magazines

Problem with 3g on trains is that they go so fast the device spends a lot of time searching for the next mast.
Northern Trains tend not to have this problem
Web browsing is usually fine; streaming audio and video can be painful.0 -
