Combined laptop/tablet?

Hello

I work for a small charity and need a laptop or similar to use in the office and also at home while working for them. They are happy for me also to use it for personal use at home. I've been wondering a bit about what to buy. Work stuff would be the usual documents etc, they love publisher so would need to be able to cope with that, internet, email. Nothing difficult. Home use would be much the same really, I don't do games or music and photos are on my phone.

I use dropbox for documents and a hard drive to back up so demands on the thing wouldn't be great so something on the cheap end of the scale would be fine. I'd love a combined laptop/tablet thingie and would happily chip in a bit to buy one. So can anyone recommend one or has anyone seen any good deals around recently? Are prices likely to come down nearer Christmas? Anything I shouldn't go for? I haven't bought a computer for around 7 years so a lot to learn.

Any advice would be received very gratefully. Thanks, Liz.

  • It is something of a minefield picking the right device.
But based on what you're looking for, look at the Microsoft Surface RT 10.1" (32Gb) that PC World currently have at £269. It's a 10" tablet that comes with a magnetic clip on keyboard so doubles as a notebook\tablet.
No problem using your familiar MS Office products like Publisher as it's an MS Windows device. This model is relatively cheap now because they have launched a newer model in the Surface 2.

I was also going to suggest Microsoft Surface.

Thanks, some great ideas already. I don't really want to pay for MSOffice as I usually use Open Office. It's just Publisher they love. You're right, it is a bit of a minefield but any of these look good. A larger screen would be nice though as my current laptop has a nice big screen but appreciate that probably isn't possible.

Just a thought, are the keyboards on these comfortable? I touch type so tend to go quite fast, I imagine I'd soon get used to it but would be interested to know of any problems. thanks

Play with Asus transformer before (not this model, but similar), Keyboard are OK.

    No idea about MS surface.

I think you could ring up John lewis to see if they have any on display in store. They sell both Asus and MS mentioned above.

Looking at spec for £269 MS surface, it is the "touch keyboard cover" come with it. There is another one with 'type' cover at £109, And I though that is what you need if you type fast. Or alternatively get a bluetooth keyboard when you need to type something long.
