I bought 3 plants last year, slugs loved them and they did not flower, but this year they were beautiful.
Thanks for the tips on seed planting, I will save them and try and grow some more.
Unlike some poppies they have 2 or 3 flowers on just one stem.0 -
Glad it's not just me. I've done everything by the book and never managed to grow them! It's a shame because the colour of the flowers is amazing.
I think it is quite well known that Mecanopsis does not last. One year I bought some from a church fare and they were lovely but they did not come back again the following year. So disappointing!.
This year I have cracked open a seed head from what I thought was the opium poppy and sowed the seeds in pots. This is the big bright red one and my son says it is not the opium (Somniferum) one but with a name like that I think it must be! They are growing well but I will probably have to give them away as I don't have any room with all this propagation. But, the blue one is definitely different. I like the Welsh one, small and yellow, but others think it is like a weed. Certainly cheers me up in early May.0 -
I think you need to freeze the seeds for a while before planting!0

I believe that poppies thrive in poor soil
This is what I was told when I tried to get some seeds from the poppies on my old allotment to germinate - I had taken too much care of them.0
