Debts arent mine

I wondered if someone could help me.

I keep receiving letters from debt collecting companies who have taken over debts from 6 years ago. these seem to be mainly for store cards and one is as much as £1,600 in HMV!! Apparently as the person who set these cards up has the same first name and surname as me and also has the same date of birth (?!) they have done a database search and now they are linked to me.

I was unaware of this until i applied for a residential mortgage and has caused me so many problems. my credit has always been good and i have never had a store/credit card ever! I signed up to experian credit checks so now have an alert for anything that may be set up in my name etc which makes me feel a bit better.

But i am still getting letters through chasing me for debts. My credit file also has several addresses linked to it all from an area that i have never lived all from this other person.

The debts are all around 6 years old it seems but it still seems to affect me.

Can anyone help please as i dont know what to do. i have called the comapnies whom i apparently owe money too but i am not getting anywhere!

Thank you

Are the actual debts/account listed on your credit reports? e.g defaults etc?

Or is it just the linked addresses that show?

You can instruct the CRAs and companies to remove the linked addresses, as they are nothing to do with you. Tell them that you will take them to the FOS and ICO if they do not.

Not as easy as it sounds. trying to remove a linked address from Experian file before anything comes from it but they have said HSBC say its legit so wont let them remove so I have to go to my account holding branch. I don't hold an account with HSBC!!! General email to HSBC customer care to try resolve it

  • We've just had exactly the same problem and are in the middle of trying to get it sorted. It's worrying how a mistake like this can lead to so many problems and we were completely unaware it had gone on our credit file also.

Write a letter to the companies involved stating the facts and ask them to investigate (phoning gets us nowhere either!). Also speak to Experian who can mark the entries as disputed and will also contact the companies asking for confirmation.

Fingers crossed it will be sorted soon.
