managed to get a couple of bags of chestnuts reduced tonight for 10p from Mr@ so just wondering what could be done with them?
Was thinking about some sort of stuffing I could make that's freezable to take round to my mums for Xmas dinner?
any good recipes or any other ideas would be greatly appreciated
Think there was a chestnut thread not too long ago somewhere but cant find it!!!

I am afraid 'real' chestnuts never get turned into anything except a hot oven in my house! I adore them! (I buy the ready cooked ones for stuffing cos that bag of chestnuts keep imploring me to 'eat me now'!)0

Sorry to hijack thread... I picked a load of chestnuts from a local tree (well, picked them up from the ground) a week ago... How long will they keep fresh for?
TIA0 -
fruball - most chestnut trees in Britain are of the 'conker' variety and not edible. please check them out before eating!0

here is a link to how to tell 'edible' chestnuts from 'conkers'!

These are definitely eaters and very good they are too. We have had some, oven roasted, but have an awful lot of them so need to know how long they will last!
We have a tremendous amount of sweet chestnut trees round here and the one I found was tucked up at the end of a residential street so hardly anyone would know it was there! I have never seen so many chestnuts and if I had taken a dustpan and brush with me, I would have brought back even more! The wind had blown them all into one place on the pavement so once the leaves were brushed away, it was just a case of scooping them up! Never seen anything like it and neither had my friend who adores chestnuts.
I actually don't even know where my nearest conker tree is but I should find out so the kids can experience bruised fingers like we all did as kids :rotfl: Loved conkers0 -
Wow! You are so so lucky! no sweet chestnut trees here - only conkers and they are getting harder and harder to find!
as for keeping them, I should think a cool dry place and not packed in plastic they should last for some good few weeks .
I think I remember seeing a map that shows the sweet chestnut trees are all in the very south of Britain.........they don't quite make it into Wales or the Midlands!0 -
We have two sweet chestnuts near us (plus two conkers too). Plenty of spiny fruits but when you open them they are remarkably tiny and not big enough to roast and peel.
Smaller than peanuts and mostly peel.
Shame, they would have been good if they had been bigger.0 -

There is one right opposite my house which is the same. Tiny nuts which are too small to be worthwhile except to the squirrels!
The one I found over the other side of town produced ones almost as big as the supermarket ones!0
