I have read through the definitions and they are self-employed, not disguised employees.

You said you would save yourself money if you employed them.

That being the case, as I said, it's got to be worth considering :money:
  • I would save money potentially as I would pay less in an hourly wage then I would pay for the work that they can usually do in an hour (I pay per piece of work or project). However it wouldn't be feasible to work in this way for either of us, hence I'm not employing them already. Thanks for the input.

Well you'd either save money or you wouldn't. You need to know your numbers when in business ;)

If you'd save money putting them on your books, I don't understand why you can't/won't?

If you know how much they can write in an hour and can pay less per hour than it costs you for the product of these per item, I don't see why it's not feasible.

You can always include the target in their employment contract. Constantly failing to meet target would be grounds for dismissal ... but of course it won't ever come to that on a casual basis, you simply don't call upon them again for their services if they are not delivering.
(That way there's no legal issues to worry about)

Are you sure you have come to the right forum?
This is MoneySavingExpert.com after all, and it's odd you come here but you don't appear to want to save money.

Please don't patronise me. I think my business figures speak for themselves. The status of my 'employees' was not the reason for this thread - it was to save money/ask advice on my accountancy quote. Also - I've been using MSE for many years. I have a newbie tag due to a technical issue, so, again, less of the patronisation please.

    Technical reasons? :rotfl:

Please tell us what what other user names you have used on here. Perhaps it'll get you an automatic re-entry onto my exclusive ignore list

I'm for keeping them as contractors, they seem to meet the criteria and it's a damn sight more flexible, and you don't have to care about holidays, NI, maternity, sickness etc. I used to work for mega software corp, probably 25% of the staff were contract, meant they could be more agile.

I haven't used any to post on the biz forum as I haven't needed to post on here before. I've had one previous username and a member since about 2007.

I'll leave you here as I've got enough on my plate.

If anyone has any responses relevant to the question that's great. Thanks

It may be worth pointing out that saving money isn't just about saving money. It's also about value for money: the OP might be able to find a cheaper accountancy service, but this one might be better VFM in the long run. Equally, since the issue of the freelancers works as it is, and the OP has satisfied herself it's not disguised employment, and changing the t&c now could lead to losing these people and problems finding replacements, I'm another with paddy on this one.

The OP could consider alternatives for any 'new' freelancers needed, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Please also remember to be nice to all moneysavers.

The only thing I'd maybe be querying is the accountancy cloud software. To me it sounds like an unnecessary complication and expense (also, ask if they are getting commission for setting you up on it).

I know plenty of limited cos that manage to produce reasonable management accounts and thus avoid paying illegal dividends using excel - especially if your income and expenditure is fairly simple. If you're not confident with the double entry system, it can make matters much more confusing and cost twice as much.

Presumably, as a director you'll want to pay yourself a salary - unless you are getting national insurance credits from elsewhere, or have other income above your personal allowance.
